Vegetation development since the ice age

As the glaciers retreated bare rock became colonised by lichens, mosses and herbs. Soils developed and the climate warmed bringing a succession of plant communities. Arctic-alpine species, grasses and shrubs moved in.

Eventually woodlands developed and arctic-alpine communities retreated to the shaded environs away from competition.

Today the vegetation had changed due to a combination of natural processes and through the influence of humans and their animals
