Humans and the changing environment

Humans and their animals have been part of the Snowdonia landscape for a very long time.

Pastoral farming methods date back to the Iron Age, ancient farm dwellings mix inextricably with the rocky landscape and stone walls appear like contour lines.

Colonisation began some 6,000 years ago in the Neolithic period when intense human activity saw the widespread clearance of the broad leaved forests.

The later Bronze Age people left their mark in a different way with monuments, burial chambers and hut circles.
