NEW – Environmental Learning Cards

The Outdoor Learning Cards have been developed by the Outdoor Education Advisory Panel (OEAP) to provide ideas for teachers and instructors wishing to use the outdoors as a medium for learning. The cards follow the success of the Adventure Learning Cards and will be adopted by Outdoor Education Centres. This practical workshop will introduce you to these cards and how to engage students in their use.

The Environment for Mountain Leaders

Have you ever wanted to learn more about the environment where you adventure in the mountains? This course is ideal for those pursuing their ML or other NGB qualifications as the workshop will guide you through the nature found in the British mountains. This workshop will also look at the formation of the mountains and their geology and also identifying glacial features that have been so instrumental in shaping the present landscape.

Conservation of the Mountain environment

Are you mystified about what conservation is and the technical terms and designations used? This workshop will guide you through the issues that surround modern conservation in the UK. It is especially suited for those who are training towards NGB awards such as WGL, MIA, summer ML or IML as the course lends itself to these syllabuses. It will explore conservation-farming schemes aimed at promoting biodiversity and access.

Plants of the Mountain Environment

Have you ever wondered what the little plants are that appear beneath you feet? This workshop will look at the mountain plants seen in Snowdonia and will guide you to areas where arctic-alpine flower communities can be found. These relict flower communities are at the very edge of their world distribution and can be found around rock ledges and large boulders sharing their home amongst woodland plants.

Extreme Coastal Environments

Take a closer look at the dynamic environments of the rocky shore and sand dunes. These extreme habitats are in a constant state of change. The extremes of daily immersion in salt water and the movements associated with tides and waves affect the patterns of plants and animals found on the rocky shore whilst the dry and arid sand dunes present physical stresses for plants to establish and develop.

Woodland and Moorland Environments

Explore some of the finest woodland and moorland habitats north Wales has to offer. Develop field identification skills and take a closer look at the variety of life that these diverse habitats have to offer. Explore plants from canopy forming trees to shrubs and shade-loving plants, ferns and mosses.
